Wednesday evening’s are back on 13th May

With the weather rapidly improving and days growing longer, we’re pleased to announce that Wednesday evening sailing will be back in just three weeks time.

This year we’ll be making the lake available to members on Wednesday evening’s from 13th May until 12 August, inclusive, between 6pm and 9pm or  dusk when then park closes  earlier  as   evenings get darker in late summer.

All members are welcome.

Cruising & camping at Chichester Harbour

If you’re interested in cruising and/or camping at Chichester harbour this year, a list of available dates has now been posted in the club hut.

There’s a new cruising group which goes to Chichester Harbour and surrounding areas throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn. The group is not associated with any specific club, so all members or CSC are welcome to join them. There is no safety boat, but the group sails closely together.

If you’re interested in taking part, or would simply like more information about what to expect, contact who will be happy to answer your questions.

If you’re on Facebook, don’t hesitate to post your pictures and stories to our Facebook page, like the great photos Tommy recently added following his recent trip to Lake Balaton in Hungary to see the Blue Ribbon 2014 sailing races.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Note to race officers

It’s been fantastic to see so many people racing since the start of the Summer season, but we’re still seeing race sheets handed in without the names of the duty officer (DO) and assistant (ADO) on them, or with the names of members using club boats missing.

With the great weather we’re having, the number of racers is regularly in double digits, that’s as many as 7 precious points DOs and ADOs are throwing away, and with the quality of the competition ever increasing, that could make 3-4 places difference at the end of the season.

So, remember: No name = No points.

12 new members first to gain RYA Level 1 with Croydon Sailing Club!

Congratulations to the 12 new members that have just become the first recipients of official RYA level 1 certificates under the guidance of CSC’s hard working team of instructors!

Conditions couldn’t have been much better for the two day course, hosted by Surrey Docks Watersports Center, with temperatures in the 20s and winds ranging from force 1 to 3 (that’s wind speeds of 1-10 knots or 1-5m/s for those of you that weren’t on the course), increasing steadily across the weekend, as if somehow magically linked to the on-water confidence of the fantastic group of learners.

With each instructor working with a group of 3 candidates, the course began with a gentle on-water familiarisation, giving everyone the chance to get a feel for the Topper Omega sailing dinghies and a first chance to take control of the tiller (steering), then worked through all of the essential on- and off-water skills and knowledge needed to enable them to become confident, independent dinghy sailors.

By the end, all of the candidates were able to sail up, down and across the wind, successfully keeping the boat upright even when the stronger breezes came to liven things up during day 2.

Their on (or should that be in?) water experience finished with an (optional) capsize drill, and despite the gasps and looks of horror when it was first mentioned at the start of the course, all of the candidates were actually excited to give it a go and there were even volunteers to do it again!

To cap off the weekend, the instructors took all of the successful candidates to the Wibbly Wobbly for a celebratory lemonade, and a fairly unique pub experience.

Finally, we would like to say a massive thank you to Simon Winkley, RYA Sailing Development Officer for Thames Valley & London Region, who helped organise the weekend and took on the role of Senior Instructor, without whom this course would not have been possible.

A great weekend had by all. Looking forward to seeing everyone back at the club!

And, Janice, as promised, we didn’t mention your team’s run in with the harbour wall once! 😉

Return to Sailing

It was great to so many new members had been reinvigorated by our recent Push The Boat Out open day and decided to give sailing another try on our inaugural Return to Sailing one-day refresher course, yesterday.

The course consisted of a mixture of both off-water theory and simulator work, and on-water practice, and while it wasn’t possible to spend as much time on the water as we’d hoped (due to adverse weather), you could see the confidence and excitement building throughout the day, and we look forward to seeing everyone at a regular club meeting soon!

Vive Le Pursuit!

To celebrate the arrival of Summer at Croydon Sailing Club (for one weekend at least), we decided to give a new form of pursuit race a try: Le Pursuit.

Inspired by Le Mans, it’s a standing start on the pontoon and when the horn blows and your dinghy class is called, run to your boat, jump in a go, go, go!

A few impressive running-diving-pushing-off starts, a few not so good. A few clearly can’t tie a highway man’s hitch as well as they thought and few got it just right. All in all a fantastic day in the Sun, and congratulations to Neil (first race) and Tony (second race), winners of the first of what we hope will be many Le Pursuits.

(A big thanks to Susy for the photos!)

Push the Boat Out for Open Day 2014

We’re pleased to announce that this year’s Open Day will be on Sunday, 18 May 2014.

Come along between the hours of 11 am and 2 pm  when members will be present to take you and family members out on a taster sail. It’s an ideal opportunity to find  what the club has  to offer and meet its members. A majority of  Sailing Clubs throughout the UK are holding  a Push the Boat Out Day over this particular weekend  as it provides the perfect opportunity to encourage people to get down to their local sailing venue, have a go and find out how just easy it is to get involved in the sport and is supported by the Royal Yachting Association ( RYA).

The boat park gates will be open and  activities for families will be taking place there :-

  • Taster sails across the lake
  • Make a model boat and race it at the end of the afternoon, fastest boat to the buoy wins a prize.
  • Try you hand at manoeuvring the tiller to ” Go About or Gybe” on a simulator boat in the boat park.
  • Design and colour your own sail
  •  Learn the language of sailing -try to name all the parts of a dinghy.
  • Take home  RYA souvenirs  of your visit.
  • Refreshments  on sale and a bric-a-brac stall provided by Upper Norwood Association Community Care.

There will be an opportunity to sign up for a Learn to Sail course to start in the following weeks. We do not charge for your sailing experience  but anyone who wishes to buy  a raffle ticket for the Draw at the end of the day will help raise funds towards our forthcoming year racing Trophies Fund.

Norwood lake is one of the smallest sailing areas in the UK but located in the heart of London in a Croydon park. It is a good, safe place  to start sailing  for families and adult individuals who live locally. Our club is developing to cater for the needs of local residents and offers excellent value for money.

All the equipment  needed will be provided including a buoyancy aid. It’s best to turn up with some warm clothes, a pair of old shoes and a waterproof coat as it’s nearly always cooler out on the water than on the shore. If the wind is light or you’re in a more stable steady boat then you’ll only get a few splashes! There is no charge but it would help us to plan the day  if you register  your interest  by email or phone 02084059959.

Croydon Council  have funded our Club to train instructors and develop so that it can offer a  learn to sail programme and get people of all ages and backgrounds to experience what it is like to sail on inland waters. Croydon is unique in that is one of the few London Boroughs to have this facility and the Council want to see more residents taking part in sports on South Norwood Lake.”
