{"id":690,"date":"2015-08-12T12:51:50","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T12:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.croydonsailingclub.co.uk\/?p=690"},"modified":"2015-08-13T11:18:17","modified_gmt":"2015-08-13T11:18:17","slug":"volunteers-and-the-importance-of-ados","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.croydonsailingclub.co.uk\/?p=690","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers and the importance of ADOs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everything that\u00a0Croydon Sailing Club (CSC) does is\u00a0only possible thanks to the generosity of\u00a0members kind enough to\u00a0give up\u00a0their time to\u00a0make it happen: whether it&#8217;s Sunday racing, Wednesday practice, responding to enquiries\u00a0or running training courses,\u00a0it&#8217;s only possible\u00a0thanks to unpaid volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also thanks to these volunteers that we&#8217;re able to keep <a href=\"http:\/\/www.croydonsailingclub.co.uk\/?page_id=27\">the cost of membership so low<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why, as Sailing Secretary, I thought I&#8217;d spend a few moments talking about the importance of assistant duty officers or ADOs and why you should feel good about giving up 2-4 Sunday mornings a year to help run race sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do you need a DO <em>and<\/em> an ADO?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without duty officers\u00a0there would be no sailing.<\/p>\n<p>At a basic level,\u00a0two heads\u00a0are better than one when it comes to preparing the jetty, setting the course and keeping track of the race, and it&#8217;s definitely easier to write\u00a0down finish times when you have someone else to ring the bell and let you know when dinghies cross the line.<\/p>\n<p>But more importantly,\u00a0if someone gets into difficulty it&#8217;s always good to know that there&#8217;s an\u00a0ADO\u00a0on hand to\u00a0make sure they&#8217;re OK and take the appropriate action while the DO keeps an eye on the rest of the fleet. Without an ADO, the race would have to be abandoned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But I only come down on Wednesdays, why should I help on a Sunday?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The volunteers\u00a0that\u00a0give up their time to\u00a0make Wednesday evenings possible\u00a0are the same members that come down on a\u00a0Sunday morning to race.<\/p>\n<p>So, think of being an\u00a0ADO as a way to say thank you to all of those other members who\u00a0open up the boat park, help you get rigged,\u00a0man the safety boat, maintain the club dinghies you sail\u00a0and all the other things so many of us take for granted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens if I can&#8217;t make it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t panic!
