{"id":569,"date":"2015-04-19T16:29:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T16:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.croydonsailingclub.co.uk\/?p=569"},"modified":"2015-04-19T19:12:54","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T19:12:54","slug":"introducing-the-croydon-yardstick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.croydonsailingclub.co.uk\/?p=569","title":{"rendered":"Introducing the Croydon Yardstick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The start of the new Summer season on 12 April also sees the start of new innovation: the Croydon Yardstick (CY).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are Croydon Sailing Club (CSC) introducing CY?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone\u00a0that&#8217;s sailed at South Norwood Lake would probably agree that it is\u00a0a unique sailing experience, so while the Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) has served us well for many years, it was felt that, like many other sailing clubs across the country, CSC&#8217;s\u00a0yardstick should be more representative of the\u00a0particular features and circumstances of our club and its location.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is CY intended to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Much like a golf handicap, but calculated using\u00a0classes of dinghy not\u00a0individuals, CY is as an evolution\u00a0of PY that will make\u00a0it <em>slightly <\/em>more challenging for classes of dinghy that have performed above reasonable expectation over recent\u00a0seasons and open up opportunities for\u00a0classes of dinghy that have consistently underperformed over an extended period.<\/p>\n<p>CY is purely intended to ensure a more level playing field for all CSC members and is not designed in any way\u00a0to penalise or benefit any individual or individuals over any other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How was it calculated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CY is based on\u00a0two of the 3 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rya.org.uk\/racing\/Pages\/portsmouthyardstick.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">methods recommended by the RYA<\/a>: manual calculations, based on recent race results, plus common sense.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, we hope to bring in additional data from\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pyonline.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Race Analysis Website<\/a>, the third method suggested by RYA,\u00a0which was not available to us this time around due to an RYA system upgrade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do the changes\u00a0affect me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With each class of dinghy sailed at CSC now allocated a Croydon Number (CN) rather than a Portsmouth Number (PN), the exact effect will depend on the class on dinghy you sail at CSC.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how PNs compare to CNs for the most popular dinghy classes at CSC:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Class<\/th>\n<th>PN<\/th>\n<th>CN<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Byte<\/td>\n<td>1190<\/td>\n<td>1190<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Byte C2<\/td>\n<td>1146<\/td>\n<td>1129<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Comet<\/td>\n<td>1190<\/td>\n<td>1190<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Enterprise<\/td>\n<td>1097<\/td>\n<td>1097<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Firebird<\/td>\n<td>1256<\/td>\n<td>1256<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Heron<\/td>\n<td>1345<\/td>\n<td>1365<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Laser<\/td>\n<td>1087<\/td>\n<td>1103<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Mirror<\/td>\n<td>1385<\/td>\n<td>1390<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Pico<\/td>\n<td>1300<\/td>\n<td>1300<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Topper<\/td>\n<td>1313<\/td>\n<td>1313<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In a typical race, this means that a Byte C2 will have to gain an additional 20-30 second advantage over a Comet to win during the Summer season, and that\u00a0the rest of the\u00a0fleet will have to make up an additional minute on a Heron in\u00a0a pursuit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will CY ever change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes: to ensure that it remains fair to all members and dinghy classes, CY will be reviewed at the end of each season to take into account the\u00a0most recent race results and changes in the make up of the CSC fleet.<\/p>\n<p>CY will not change mid-season unless their are exceptional circumstances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The start of the new Summer season on 12 April also sees the start of new innovation: the Croydon Yardstick (CY).
